The 10-Minute Karekare & Piha Beach Tour

For fans of the movie "The Piano," these beaches would be most familiar as backdrops to Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin.

Well we had an afternoon to spare and visitors to regale with the beauty of New Zealand, so off we went for an hour's drive 35 kilometers West of Auckland . First stop was Karekare Beach.

We spent less than three minutes at the place as the tide was in and it was chilly. Drove for another two minutes, and passed the waterfall, parked the car, took pictures, then we were off again to see Piha.

The painful part of this journey was that I left my camera home and all I had was my phone to document the whole thing. Thankfully, I still got a few decent shots out.

Piha from afar was amazing. It was even more glamorous up close. It would have been great to manage a climb up the rock but we went off running into the surf and tasting sea foam instead. It had been a long and amazing day and time was short, so maybe today was just time for soaking in the insanely beautiful landscape.

Even if the tour lasted only 10 minutes, I say it was worth the hour's drive each way.
